Summary
The Shipwright is responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of wooden, fiberglass, and/or steel vessels, ensuring all work meets rigorous marine standards and specifications for seaworthiness and structural integrity. This role requires exceptional craftsmanship, deep knowledge of marine architecture, and proficiency with traditional and modern tools.
Key Responsibilities
Construction & Fabrication:
Interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics to plan and execute construction or repair projects.
Lay out, cut, shape, and join components such as frames, planks, decks, bulkheads, and cabin structures.
Work with a variety of materials including hardwoods, composite materials (fiberglass/epoxy), and metal.
Repair & Maintenance:
Inspect vessels (hulls, keels, decks, rudders) to identify defects, damage, or structural deterioration.
Perform specialized repairs, including plank replacement, hull fairing, caulking, painting, and fitting out interiors.
Install or repair machinery foundations, alignment of engines, and fit marine systems (e.g., ventilation, piping).
Safety & Quality Control:
Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and marine construction regulations (e.g., ABS, USCG, or equivalent local standards).
Ensure precise measurements and tolerances are maintained throughout all phases of work.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
Teamwork & Communication:
Collaborate with engineers, naval architects, electricians, and riggers to complete projects efficiently.
Document all work performed, including materials used and time logs.
Required Qualifications
Experience: Proven experience (typically 3+ years) working as a Shipwright, Boat Builder, or Marine Tradesperson.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a recognized Shipwright or Marine Technology apprenticeship/trade school program is highly preferred.
Technical Skills:
Expert knowledge of hull construction techniques (traditional and modern).
Proficiency with carpentry tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and blueprints.
Experience with rigging, lofting, fairing, and fiberglass layup/repair.
